Measuring Perth's quality of living

HOW does Perth rate for its liveability? In the latest international quality of living” survey conducted by management consultants, Mercer, Perth takes fifth position behind Auckland, Sydney, Wellington and Melbourne as the best cities in the Asia-Pacific region. (See survey)
Worldwide Perth ranks in 21st spot in the top 50 international cities. The top three worldwide are all small European cities - Vienna comes first followed by Zurich and Geneva.
Mercer bases its assessments on what it describes as detailed assessments and evaluations of 10 key categories and 39 criteria or factors”. The categories included the political and social environment, local economy, health services housing and public services such as electricity, water, telephone, mail, public transport, traffic congestion and airport services.
The city of New York is used to provide a baseline index figure of 100. In Perths case it achieved a score of 104.3 points putting it 28 cities ahead of New York, which took 49th position. The results this year covered 215 cities and are primarily designed to assist governments and companies when placing employees on overseas assignments.
