Retraining older drivers will 'cut crashes'

US researchers have discovered that giving older people intensive retraining can make them safer drivers - and prolong the period over which they can continue to drive safely.

In fact using unpublished data; the researchers have calculated that such interventions can reduce a participant's risk of being involved in a crash by close to 10%.

The study involved 126 randomly selected drivers aged 70 and older who in earlier tests had recorded "sub-optimal" driving performance. The intervention involved eight hours of classroom training plus two-hours training behind the wheel. Interestingly 90% of the participants said they believed their driving had improved as a result of the program.
