Feeling at home with sustainability
The design of a sustainable home can bring major benefits to the occupants - besides saving them money. Perth's City of Subiaco Council has been explaining the advantages with this new demonstration house built at the centre of the suburb's redevelopment area.
The house, which has a top, five-star rating for energy efficiency, is also made from low allergen materials, fittings that can be used by people with disabilities, and even a share of recycled materials. Remnants of the bricks and tiles from the site's original building were crushed and reused in construction.
The house has been land-scaped with plants that need little water and in fact grey water is used for irrigation. The council says the house has cost no more to build than a conventional two-storey home of comparable size. House sponsors included the WA Sustainable Energy Development Office.
